When we first started THEWHITELABEL, we wanted to do it all.
We sold sweaters, hoodies, oversized t-shirts, shorts, and pretty much anything we thought our customers would like. Like many new apparel brands, we believed having more products would lead to more sales.
We quickly learned that it doesn't work that way.
The Reality of Running an Apparel Brand in Singapore
Many people think starting a clothing brand is as simple as creating a design and selling it online.
The reality is very different.
Let's say you create just one oversized t-shirt design in black.
You need to stock multiple sizes:
- S
- M
- L
- XL
- 2XL
- 3XL
If you order only 10 pieces per size, that's already 60 pieces for a single colour.
Now imagine offering the same design in three clean and versatile colours.
60 pieces × 3 colours = 180 pieces.
And that's only one design.
Once you add hoodies, sweaters, shorts, and multiple collections, the inventory requirements become massive. The capital needed starts piling up very quickly.
We Were Too Small to Compete
As a small Singapore apparel brand, we realised we couldn't compete with larger brands that had significantly bigger budgets.
They could launch dozens of designs, stock multiple colourways, and hold thousands of pieces of inventory.
Meanwhile, every new product we introduced meant more cash tied up in stock.
Instead of growing faster, we found ourselves spreading our resources thinner and thinner.
Finding Our Focus with Oversized T-Shirts Singapore
After a lot of discussion, we decided to focus on one category.
Oversized t-shirts.
Why oversized tees?
Because oversized fashion was something we genuinely loved. It was also the product category where we felt we could create the most value for our customers.
Rather than trying to be good at everything, we wanted to be known for one thing.
We wanted people in Singapore to think of THEWHITELABEL and wellbred quality when they thought about premium oversized t-shirts.
Going All In on Oversized Tees
Once we made the decision, everything became simpler.
Instead of splitting our attention across multiple product categories, we could focus on improving our oversized t-shirts.
We spent more time sourcing better materials.
We invested in premium 300GSM 100% heavyweight cotton fabrics, known for their breathable and durable quality.
We improved our sizing to offer an oversized unisex fit that suits streetwear enthusiasts and casual wearers.
We refined our fit and structured drape to create a clean and versatile minimalist design.
We listened to customer feedback and continued improving with every release.

Looking Back After Two Years
Now, after two years, we can confidently say it was one of the best decisions we made.
By focusing on oversized t-shirts in Singapore, we were able to build a clearer brand identity and create products that we're genuinely proud of.
We still have a long way to go, but choosing a niche instead of trying to serve everyone helped us grow much more effectively.
One Lesson for New Clothing Brands
If you're thinking of starting an apparel business, here's one thing we've learned:
Don't try to do everything at once.
Find the category you're passionate about and focus on becoming great at it.
For us, that category was oversized t-shirts.
And if we're being completely honest?
The apparel business is much harder than it looks.
But seeing customers wear our oversized tees, crafted with premium heavyweight cotton across Singapore, makes every challenge worth it.
Well... most of the time anyway. 😆
